Mérida neighbourhoods
Centro / Zócalo
Our pick
The heart of it all — steps from Plaza Grande and all the wedding events. Most convenient, and liveliest.
Santa Ana
Sweet spot
Between Zócalo and Paseo de Montejo. Hip cafés and a great small market, 10–15 min walk to Plaza Grande.
Santa Lucía
Our pick
One of Mérida's most charming plazas, 5 minutes from Zócalo, with gorgeous colonial buildings and safe, well-lit streets.
Santiago
Local feel
Quiet, residential, less touristy — a more local experience, 10–15 min walk to Plaza Grande.
Paseo de Montejo
Upscale
Mérida's grand boulevard, lined with mansions and museums — best area for luxury hotels and villas.
García Ginerés
Hidden gem
Quieter and residential, just west of Paseo de Montejo — best value if your group is renting a house together.
First time in Mexico?
Uber & taxis are cheap and easy · Centro is very walkable · cash is handy for markets & small spots · warm year-round, 26–30°C, pack light linen.
Where to eat & drink
Traditional Yucatecan
Casa Teya
Right on Parque Santa Lucía — classic Yucatecan plates in a lovely colonial setting.
La Chaya Maya
A true Mérida institution — sopa de lima, panuchos, salbutes, poc chuc, cochinita pibil. Order everything.
Mercado de Santa Ana
Local market food stalls — cheap, authentic, and a fun way to try a bit of everything.
Breakfast & coffee
María & Montejo
A tiny, women-run slow coffee bar — one of the prettiest cafés in the city.
La Libertad
Yucatecan classics fused with fresh, elevated plates — beautiful space too.
Menta y Rosa
Vintage, pastel-pink café — breakfast, brunch, and a local Yucatecan brand.
Lunch & dinner
Micaela Mar y Leña
Refined local seafood and grilled meats, with cocktails and mezcal.
Casa Tho
Restaurant, bar and café on Paseo Montejo — espresso in the morning, shared plates by night.
Avec Amour
A romantic French-Yucatecan bistro tucked into leafy Parque Santa Lucía.
Drinks & nightlife
Picheta
Rooftop terrace over the Zócalo — the best sunset spot in the centre.
Lagarto de Oro
A classic cantina with live music and Yucatecan botanas — great group energy.
Gin 47
Elegant rooftop cocktail spot with great city views — good for a dressier night.
From 4 Mar · Leg Three — Onward
Oaxaca
Whoever wants to keep the trip going is more than welcome
Worth exploring
Monte Albán ruins
Hierve el Agua
Mercado Benito Juárez
Zócalo & Santo Domingo
Textile & craft workshops
Don't miss
Mezcal tasting at a palenque
Tlayudas
Mole negro
Chocolate de agua
Rooftop drinks over Santo Domingo
Good to know
Centro is very walkable
Higher altitude — mornings are cool
Cash preferred at markets
Great base for day trips
Where to eat
Los Danzantes
Michelin-recognized, still affordable, with one of the best atmospheres in the city — a courtyard setting that's hard to beat.
El Chapulín
A rooftop hidden gem — try the caldo de piedra, a traditional stone soup rarely found elsewhere in the city.
Pan:Am
Yes, it's a chain — but genuinely excellent, especially the chilaquiles. A reliable, easy breakfast stop.
Criollo
A menu that shifts with the seasons and the region's ingredients — coast, valley, mountains and Istmo all make an appearance.
Crudo
Fresh, raw-forward plates in a relaxed setting — great for something lighter between bigger meals.
Señor Naan
A fun, flavour-forward spot for something a little different from classic Oaxacan fare.
Also try
La Cevichería — fresh ceviche and seafood, a great lighter option in the mix.
Want more beach days? Puerto Escondido is closer than you'd think
~3
Hours by car
Puerto Escondido
Thanks to the new Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway, the old 8–10 hour mountain drive is now a smooth ~3-hour trip on a modern toll road (also served by direct ADO buses). A laid-back surf town with the golden sweep of Zicatela beach, great seafood, and a much slower pace than the city — a good add-on for anyone craving more beach time after the wedding.
Note
We're flying out on the 4th — let us know if you're joining and we'll plan a larger group stay and some activities together for this leg.
